If certain eating habits in Japan, Korea and China were not adhered to, the resulting deficiency of minerals would be disastrous. One habit in those countries that contributes to their good health is that they eat kelp (seaweed) as part of their daily diet. The minerals contained in ocean kelp are able to counterbalance to a great extent the deficiency caused by eating white rice. Calcium and fluoride, however, are not contained in kelp. A deficiency of these two minerals affects the teeth and this accounts for the widespread tooth decay among those people. It is only in rural or
primitive areas where the people retain their teeth because of a natural wholefood diet. For instance, I have seen really beautiful teeth among the Fiji islanders.
