• If certain eating habits in Japan, Korea and China were not adhered to, the resulting deficiency of minerals would be disastrous. One habit in those countries that contributes to their good health is that they eat kelp (seaweed) as part of their daily diet. The minerals contained in ocean kelp are able to counterbalance to a great extent the deficiency caused by eating white rice. Calcium and fluoride, however, are not contained in kelp. A deficiency of these two minerals affects the teeth and this accounts for the widespread tooth decay among those people. It is only in rural or

primitive areas where the people retain their teeth because of a natural wholefood diet. For instance, I have seen really beautiful teeth among the Fiji islanders.

  • It sets off an acute inflammation of the peritoneum (peritonitis), a very painful condition accompanied by vomiting and a racing pulse rate. The abdomen then becomes swollen and tight like a board. The patient’s life will be in danger and he must be hospitalised without delay. Provided his general health is good and he is treated by a skilful surgeon, he has a good chance of pulling through.

It is possible for peptic ulcers to grow to the point where they eventually affect other organs, endangering particularly the pancreas, possibly even the liver and the transverse colon. Simple gastric ulcers are generally associated with a high acid content in the stomach, and the patient may experience belching or a sour-tasting regurgitation. If ulcers are not properly treated they may turn to cancer.

A malignant ulcer is more difficult to diagnose, since it is not normally accompanied by pain and thus not often detected until a later stage. Experience shows that malignancy is almost always connected with a lack of gastric acid, whereas a simple ulcer develops in a hyperacid condition.

  • An old doctor who served in the Austrian army once told me that they used petrol compresses for the same purpose and sometimes even treated lumbago in this way with good results.

The use of formic acid has also proved very successful in cases of neuritis and sciatica. If a sufferer knows where there is an anthill in the woods, he should go there, expose his leg to the ants and let them ‘work’ on it. After a while, he can wipe off the insects with a cloth and will soon begin to feel the benefit of this inexpensive ‘injection’ of formic acid. Of course, the patient will achieve the same effects by applying spirit of ants, an alcoholic solution which also contains formic acid. Alternatively, if you know a homoeopathic doctor you could ask to be given injections of homoeopathic formic acid. This will be sufficient to relieve neuritic pains in most cases.

If, however, yours proves to be a very stubborn case, you can combine the various treatments described above, but you may have to persevere a little longer before experiencing relief.

It is also to your advantage to rid the body of toxins. Especially in the spring, if you live in a temperate zone, the blood can be cleansed by taking bitter herbs, followed by a juice diet that will facilitate the disposal of metabolic waste products. In order to help the body eliminate the toxins, it is important to stimulate the kidneys, bowels and skin at the same time. After the juice diet, adopt a sensible natural diet so as to avoid accumulating more poisons which may start up the neuritic pain again.

  • Not long ago, I was consulted by a girl who had just returned to the Engadine Valley from a trip to Italy. Her big, shiny, bulging and staring eyes showed unmistakable signs of an overactive thyroid. She explained that her doctor had practically taken her apart without finding anything wrong, although she complained of frequently feeling very ill and weak.

When staying at the seaside this ‘sick person without a sickness’ could sleep for twenty-four hours at a time if no one woke her up. Long sleeping periods are a typical effect of the iodine contained in sea air on those suffering from a thyroid condition. Some patients become very active, vivacious and highly strung, others feel an unnatural desire and need for sleep. It is essential for such people to be aware of what the problem is, for it will enable them to adjust to their environment and to take the appropriate remedial measures.

  • It is a proven fact that a diet of wholegrain rice promotes normal blood pressure. As it regulates low as well as high pressure, it would be wrong not to give it a chance for either of these problems. Not long ago I received a letter from a friend in Germany to whom I had recommended a wholegrain rice diet for his very high blood pressure. He had followed my advice and was able to report excellent results.

He remained on the recommended diet for ten weeks and found that he had lost weight and that his blood pressure had gone down from 230 to 190. This result alone was most encouraging. He then took a two-week vacation, at the end of which his pressure had fallen even further, this time to 170. Let me add that this patient is already sixty-three years old and it is especially interesting to note that he obtained such splendid results without the aid of any medication – simply by following a diet of wholegrain rice, cottage cheese and salads. If he keeps to this diet he will experience a further reduction in blood pressure and, with it, the elasticity of the blood vessels will improve.
